Seasonal Hydro Mulch – Winter to Summer Transition

A-1 Erosion Control, LLC uses a special winter mix of seasonal hydro mulch that includes rye and Bermuda grass seeds. There are other options available, but this is the standard. We do this because the rye will grow in the winter time and protect the ground from erosion while the Bermuda lays dormant waiting for the right conditions to grow into the permanent ground cover. The following is a description of what to expect.Typically, rye seed will begin to turn brown in May.  However, depending upon the temperature and how much rainfall has occurred, the grass may stay green longer.

In order achieve Bermuda growth prior to the browning affect, the following is recommended:

  1. The grass needs watered throughout the winter season.
  2. The rye and un-hulled seed mix needs to be mowed throughout the winter season a minimum of one (1) time every two (2) weeks to allow the sun to give nutrients to the seed mix.

Un-hulled Bermuda seed has a hull on it to protect it through the winter months.  As the season changes, the ground temperature must be a minimum of 70 degrees consistently for 2 to 3 weeks before the germination process begins to remove the hull from the seed.

Along with this process, the ground must have the proper moisture to allow the seed to germinate.  The area must be watered at least 20-30 minutes twice a day to allow the hull to soften and “pop off”.

If the above recommendations are followed, the transition can be smooth.  While the rye is turning brown, the Bermuda is germinating, thus the ground area is turning green.  This is why we use a seasonal hydro mulch during certain times of the year.  Contact us to find out if a seasonal hydro mulch is right for your application.
